Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a shooting incident that occurred atthe Jasper Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area shooting range on Wednesday afternoon. Timothy P. Tackett 54 of Porter, IN drove himself to Porter Regional Hospital to receive treatment for a gunshot wound to his hand. Tackett was later transported by ambulance to Christ Advocate Hospital in Chicago, IL for specialized treatment. Tackett was allegedly adjusting a sight on his rifle when it fell, causing it to discharge. Tackett was struck in the right hand as a result of the gunshot. Tackett advised Conservation Officers he did not realize the gun was loaded. The incident remains under investigation to determine how Tackett sustained his injuries. Conservation Officers encourage those handling all firearms to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, always treating the firearm as if it wereloaded. Indiana Conservation Officers offer hunter safety courses that teach the care and proper use in handling firearms.
