All Hammond Fire Department personnel are currently deployed at a fire at Midwest Steel located on 165th Street just west of Indianapolis Boulevard. The fire still rages as this is being written. We will keep you posted as to any developments. So far, no injuries have been reported and we pray that remains the case. East Chicago Fire Department will be covering any other calls in Hammond. EC FD will be escorted by Hammond PD.
This fire comes on the 22nd anniversary of the last line of duty firefighter death in Hammond. On December 16, 1991, Hammond firefighters were called to the George C. Meyer Warehouse at 518 Hoffman Street. Firefighter Fred Biedron, Jr. perished in the fire. He was missing inside the wreckage of the building and his family waited as bulldozers plowed through the wreckage looking for him. This has to weigh on the minds of firefighters as they work to battle this blaze tonight.

Hope everyone stays safe!
Is that the old Dietrich building?
It is Midwest Steel. I believe that is the old Dietrich building or next door.
Praying for a safe outcome !!!
I can’t see how they can do the job they after the Mayor has cut so many men & pieces of equipment from the Department – if anyone is injured – he’s to blame – Stay safe Brothers, don’t risk your lives for a building when it’s already lost.
Amen Frank!
Its Jupiter Aluminum building
I heard it was not jupiter aluminum. It’s a building behind or close by
The building is actually occupied by Midwest Steel Fabricators. It is right behind Jupiter Aluminum. As you look at the building from 165th Street, all you would see is a large building that says Jupiter Aluminum on it. Most people would believe this is Jupiter Aluminum but for accuracy purposes, it is actually Midwest Steel Fabricators and is a separate building in the same industrial complex. There is no signage visible for Midwest Steel Fabricators that I saw. I have been out there several times in the last 12 hours.
I work there and the place ant lookin so good no one was hurt it happend after we left for the day
