Popular Mexican Restaurant Closes Suddenly

19 Nov

by Ken Davidson

They had the best margaritas . . . that was the comment I heard from three separate people when I told them about the closing of La Carreta mexican restaurant today.  Employees at a nearby store told of a “raid” by Indiana State Police officers prior to the sudden closing yesterday.  A sign on the door simply says “We are closed, sorry for the inconvenience.”

La Carreta has two locations in Lake County, one located in Merrillville and one in Schererville.  Ironically, the restaurant battled internet rumors of a health department closure earlier this year.  That rumor spread from Louisiana where a high school newspaper published a spoof article that the restaurant had been closed.

Speculation based on the involvement of the Indiana State Police revolves around a state tax or alcohol license issue.  A public record search revealed no apparent tax liens.  The Gazette has submitted a public records request and will follow up on this story. Thank you for reporting. I feel this restaurant has been nothing but top notch. Top notch service, top notch food, top notch atmosphere and cleanliness at both locations. I hope whatever is going on gets resolved soon! 🙂

Illegals …..If you’ve ever been in there you’d had to of noticed All the employees, most of them did not even speak or understand English. Don’t say, no illegals here,if you do you are not based in reality. Where do you think all the illegals go when they flooded into the USA ? Everywhere. Mainly to where friends and relatives lived.

      • mr.d November 20, 2013 at 12:09 pm #

        dude you’re an idiot.

      • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 1:52 pm #

State Police will NOT raid your place for immigrants they have I C E for that. And this place is called LA CARRETA (latinos) not LONG HORN. (americans)

      • Dr. Naughty November 20, 2013 at 6:45 pm #

Wrong. Excise police raid establishments with undocumented “working” illegal aliens as well.

      • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 3:18 pm #

Sorry to bust ur bubble but all the waiters had to know English to take any1s order specially if that place is most of time full of ppl that don’t speak spanish… And just cuz u don’t speak English doesn’t mean ur illegal!!!!!

      • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 10:51 pm #

That’s a assumption. You’re a Moran. Don’t eat at a Mexican restaurant if you don’t like Mexicans. Stay the hell out. People like you should stay under your rock or cave.

I was told that they were reserving uneaten food. Gag….

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 9:31 am #

That was a false rumor that was spread by someone in Louisiana, like this article says, good to know that you are one of those who don’t find out the facts before you spread rumors.

    • Indy November 20, 2013 at 4:06 pm #

That was bogus & it was a place I Louisiana

      food was the worst

    • Heather November 20, 2013 at 11:56 am #

    • allisha November 20, 2013 at 4:26 pm #

Wow…well their food is way better then your opinion…

    • taxproplus November 20, 2013 at 8:42 pm #

You are so right! Amen! I have ate at a TON of five star top notch restaurants, most of them not around here. Thats all I do because I don’t want to cook. This is not great Mexican. The chicken is very bland and I am not the only one who agrees. Everyone I know that has eaten there, which are mostly hispanic friends, dont even want to go…unless its for the drinks (its just the large alcohol content that make the drinks good as well). They need a lesson on how to cook with good flavor. They are being very cheap with the ingrediants.

  11. Joe Marinaro via Facebook November 20, 2013 at 2:48 am #

Vicki, police do not raid restaurants for reserving food, but restaurants do sue people for spreading false rumors on the internet.

    • becky November 20, 2013 at 3:56 am #

In Indy they said the raids were for illegal immigrants.

      • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 9:19 am #

If it was a raid for illegals it would have been conducted by I.C.E. not by the state police.

    • Mary Olsen November 20, 2013 at 7:13 am #

Right on Joe. I have personally never visited this establishment, however, it is unfair to speculate.

    • Drea November 20, 2013 at 7:16 am #

Yes, thank you for saying that. Obviously, there’s something shady, if not illegal going on, so any comment that starts with “I was told..”, “I heard…” is only doing a disservice to people trying to find out what is really going on.

  12. Rebecca November 20, 2013 at 3:49 am #

Joe…take a chill pill. She said, she was told. And I highly doubt a restaurant that has been mysteriously shut down, is investigating comments on public threads lol.

I like VILLA DE SOL restaurant over on RTE 30 & Taft in Merrillville..they have awesome food and very clean and Cheryl the owners wife is an excellent businesswoman…check it out you won’t be sorry!!

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 5:16 am #

I went there and was served a tamale that was cold in the center. That’s microwave food right there served as “authentic” Mexican cuisine.

      • Anonymous November 21, 2013 at 4:18 am #

Agreed batter service and the food is way better

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 6:40 am #

      Villa de sol is awesome!

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 7:19 am #

@ Lori have you been in villa del sol kitchen??? No then you would rethink What you said. they are raiding for illegals just like Labriola Bread company. duh!!!!

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 8:28 am #

For sure my favorite!! LaCaretta has nothing on this place! Their salsa is amazing!! Yuck on La Caretta!!

    • ken November 20, 2013 at 7:22 am #

  15. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 5:46 am #

and for the record Villa Del Sol sucks and the service blows. that’s why they’re always dead

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 12:59 pm #

  20. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 7:38 am #

The last time I ate there the food was inedible…….just awful, and it certainly could have been cleaner. I never went back. In my opinion, Villa del Sol is #1.

  21. jamesDMZ November 20, 2013 at 7:38 am #

Wait, is it the La Carreta in Merrillville or both?

  22. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 7:42 am #

La Carreta has good food. Now Villa De Sol that is the worst food I have ever tasted !!! Go to El Salto for some great Mexican food

    • Coco November 20, 2013 at 11:55 am #

      El Salto is great!

      • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 12:16 pm #

YES! El Salto is where its at! Great food and margaritas! Management is great there too!

  23. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 7:48 am #

I have went there a month ago with a few of my friends.. The margaritas are great, no doubt but when we got our food, one of my girlfriends found a hair in her food. They gave her very bad serve afterwards that I had to get involved and explain everything to the manager on duty in Spanish. It just go complicated that the waitress was very rude to my friend.

  24. Karen Utofka via Facebook November 20, 2013 at 8:02 am #

I agree with Lori; Villa Del Sol has the best Mexican food. The first time I ate at La Carretta was when they first opened and I thought it was very good. The last time I ate there, about a year ago, it was absolutely awful…….my food was totally inedible and the place certainly could have been cleaner.

  25. John Greene November 20, 2013 at 8:03 am #

  26. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 8:12 am #

I don’t know if they are opened or closed, but all you people that always bitch about food, why don’t you open up a restaurant and lets see how good your food tastes

  27. sandy November 20, 2013 at 8:26 am #

every time I go to taco bell in St John there fiesta taco salad shell is spoiled, I called the dis manager and they still haven’t called me back, 2 months now. I like El Amigo’s on u.s. 30 in scherer ,there not fancy but there food is good. PePe’s is over priced, but there is a mex, restaurant in lowell on rt.2 that is very good too. oh ya there is a real good mex restaurant in Highland in the plaza across from wicker park, close to Ultra’s food, they r good too. I really didn’t care for La Carreta. I think I ate there like 5 times and wasn’t happy at all. I love El Amigo’s ……………

    • Bryan Grimm November 20, 2013 at 9:02 am #

I went to La Caretta a few times…..the food just isn’t good! Authentic? No……all they put is cheese sauce on everything and my food is ALWAYS luke warm. I’m sorry…..this place is/was a sorry excuse for a Mexican Restaurant.

  29. Brian Hall via Facebook November 20, 2013 at 9:01 am #

Wife and her daughter ate there about a month ago, said the food was terrible. Beef was bitter and chicken tasted odd.

  30. Kelly November 20, 2013 at 9:06 am #

I thought they had good food, however Mi Ranchito in Lowell is the BEST – you won’t disagree!

  31. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 9:32 am #

The food there is horrible! Went there once and couldn’t believe that people would actually wait over an hour to eat there. What a shame anymore of what people in northwest Indiana actually think is good food. Hopefully someone buys both of those property’s and puts up a quality food establishment.

  34. Rev November 20, 2013 at 9:53 am #

Went there once, was disappointed. It took forever for a simple order for 2, food was cold and distasteful and service was terrible. So, oh well, you always have Taco Bell (lol basically the same quality).

  35. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 10:28 am #

If you have enough of their amazing margaritas, you don’t realize their food is hardly adequate~

    • Gil November 20, 2013 at 11:49 am #

I never ate there ! U don’t like go back to Taco Bell. . Half of yous don’t even know good authentic Mex Food. . Rude people

  36. Rhonda November 20, 2013 at 11:26 am #

My Husband used to love the place but when he found hair in the food once he was like ok it can happen…but twice? Yeah we haven’t been there since.

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 1:14 pm #

We like the one in Merrillville better but also found hair in our food many times.

  37. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 11:30 am #

VIlla del Sol was Villa del Mar before I believe – not sure what they changed their name from but I had a coupon with the restaurants previous name – SAME PLACE, SAME LOCATION, SAME OWNERS – and they wouldn’t take the coupon because … the name on the coupon wasn’t the same as the name of the restuarant at that time. Really? Didn’t like the service either and haven’t gone back. La Carreta has GREAT food & fast service, and I do like El Salto as well. Sounds like someone has it in for La Caretta. Hope they are up and running again soon.

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 1:45 pm #

It is unfortunate that this restaurant has closed, even if temporarily. You know with all the low self esteem, and BULLYING going on today with children, teens, and even adults, to even bring up the subject of suicide, is absolutely distasteful, and unacceptable.

    • Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 2:34 pm #

This restaurant was a great place to eat. Sucks they were shut down hopefully they will be back soon. The service was great and so were the servers. Yes they all spoke English they understood perfectly. To bad the ignorant people couldnt understand.

  38. Anonymous November 20, 2013 at 12:14 pm #

El Salto’s food and margaritas are waaay better! Food is MORE authentic and margaritas are waaay tastier. People like La Carreta just to get liquored up and that’s it. Im sticking with my El Salto in Merrillville. Owners are great, and so is the manager at Merrillville, Armondo. Keep it up El Salto!

Why start complaing and commenting on a post all the negativity when no one knows the true reason why they closed! Nothing but a soap box with all these rude comments.
