"Flick's" Wife Among Historic Gravestones Vandalized at Oak Hill

A Gazette reader submitted photos of recent vandalism which occurred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hammond.  Oak Hill is home to numerous historic gravesites including civil war veterans and notable dignitaries from the Calumet Region.  In this instance, one marker belonged to Opal Flickinger, wife of Jack Flickinger.  Jack Flickinger is believed to be the inspiration for the character “Flick” in the move A Christmas Story.  A bronze headstone was also damaged.  North Township Trustee Frank MrVan took over operations at the historic cemetery in 2011 after the owners failed to properly maintain the site.

A local group, Friends of Oak Hill Cemetery, has diligently worked to assist in repairing the damage done to the gravesites from years of neglect.  The group has worked diligently to assist in identifying gravesites, conduct periodic maintenance, and restore the cemetery.
