Unsafe Buildings Near Schools in Gary

by Ken Davidson

Would you feel safe with your child walking to school past these buildings?  The Gazette received a tip that we should look into some of the buildings owned by the City of Gary and Lake County.  The first three addresses that we were given were within walking distance of City Hall AND all happened to be directly across from schools.   The tipster suggested many more city owned properties, but we did not feel the need to continue with the tour.   The photos speak for themselves:

To get to the New Charter School, your child would walk past this County owned property.

That’s where I work. Sad how such a beautiful structure was left to rot. People film there a lot.

If my kid had to walk past those buildings to get to school, I would drop him off and pick him up at the door every day. A kid could easily be grabbed and pulled into one of those buildings and subjected to god knows what. Horrible.

Is the church I love to photograph on this list? Lol I went to photograph it again and to be honest that was probably my last time there. Something didnt seem right and I was actually pretty nervous being there. And there is no way in hell I would let my child way ANYWHERE out there!

I don’t see any fence around any of these properties. Are these properties also chained off from public access? Are there “Do Not Occupy” stickers posted on all access points? Did you contact the Building Commissioner to get a comment from him about these buildings? Was he available for comment?

How can u blame the city for the school’s. administration decision to build the two schools on that area? (Smh) the should hb gotten an agreement with the city , to hv them torned down and help finance the demolition.
