Nathan Kras was visiting family in Northwest Indiana on September 15 when he went to a Dick’s R U Crazee, 1221 E. 150th St in Hammond.  According to friends, Nathan felt comfortable at the Hammond bar because he had gone there before.  At approximately 1:00 as Nathan was exiting his car, three black males approached him, pointed a gun and asked him for his wallet and cell phone.  According to a family friend, Nathan recalls that he struggled briefly with the perpetrators and was shot in the leg and then the abdomen.  The perpetrators fled as Nathan crawled to the door of the bar where employees called police and an ambulance.

Nathan is now in Christ Hospital in Chicago where he has had several surgeries.  Nathan has no insurance and his friends have launched a campaign to raise funds to cover his medical expenses.  The You Caring Medical Fund Page has so far raised about $5,000 of the $25,000 goal. According to a recent update on the page, Nathan will be in the hospital for another 4-5 weeks as he receives physical therapy to be able to walk again. Nathan works as a kitchen manager for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in Rosemont, IL. The drum and bugle corps community has come out from around the country to help Nathan.
