Two Die in Early Morning Crash on 80/94 in Portage

Two people were pronounced dead after an unexplained crash on 80/94 in Portage at 4:20 am today. Indiana State Police report that Isaac Acheampong and his passenger, Cecelia Acheampong, 53, Ontario, Canada, were pronounced dead at the crash scene by Porter County Deputy Coroner Bob Byrd.

The preliminary crash investigation by Senior Trooper Lawrence McFarrin revealed that Isaac Acheampong, 62, Ontario, Canada was driving a 2014 Toyota Matrix westbound on Interstate 80/94 near the 19 mile marker. For an unknown reason, the Toyota traveled off the north side of the interstate, continued to track westbound parallel to the highway, and hit an earth embankment. After hitting the embankment, the Toyota went airborne across Jensen Road. The Toyota landed on the west side of Jensen Road after an approximately 30 foot drop off of the interstate. Jensen Rd. travels north and south under Interstate 80/94

The crash is under investigation but police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. Portage Police and EMS assisted the Indiana State Police.
