Lake County-A semi driver lost control of his semi pulling a dump trailer and rolled it over on I-65 south bound just north of the Lowell exit losing part of his load of dirt on the interstate.

Preliminary investigation revealed by Senior Trooper Marty Benner revealed that approximately 10:43 a.m., this Thursday, October 10, 2013, morning, a 1989 Peterbilt semi pulling a dump trailer, driven by Joel E Mick, 43 of Valparaiso, was south on I-65 in the right lane when he started to change lanes to go into the left lane. As the dump went into the left lane it struck an uneven portion of the roadway (there is lane repaving going on in this area, overnight, where the right lane is lower than the left lane, which is under construction. Construction, speed reduce, and uneven pavement signs are present. Mick lost control of his semi, went off the road to the right, over corrected and then rolled onto to its driver’s side sliding for approximately 75 feet blocking the de-acceleration lanes to the Lowell exit and also partially blocking the right lane.

The semi, owned by V and H Excavating Company out of Hebron, was loaded with dirt going to the Newton County landfill in Brook. The load of dirt was lost off the inner shoulder and partially in the left lane. The semi-dump had extensive damage to it.

Mick was taken to saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point with non-life threatening injuries to his head and hands. He was wearing his seat belt.

One lane of traffic is able to get by snaking through between the load of dirt partially lost in the left lane and the dump partially blocking the right lane (see picture #1); both de-acceleration lanes are closed.
