CP Mayor Defends Shooting, Says Serbian (sic) Huskies Were Hybrid Wolves

22 Jul

Mayor David Uran of Crown Point has responded to a request for information from an animal rescue organization. Via e-mail, the Mayor blames “social media” for distorting the story and says the dogs . ” . . .were Hybrid Wolves that attacked a resident family cat and the owner of the cat as well became very aggressive towards the officers.” (see full text of email below).

As has been reported by the NWI Gazette, the police report refers to the animals as coyotes. We will continue to update this story as information becomes available. The Chief of Police, Deputy Chief of Police, and property owner have not been available for comment since last Thursday despite repeated attempts by the Gazette to reach them.  There is no indication that the property owner was treated for any injuries.  The Northwest Indiana Gazette has not requested ambulance records because there was previously no claim of any injury to any human.

The owners of the dogs have provided the following documentation from her veterinarian describing the dogs as “Siberian Husky”

The full text of the Mayor’s e-mail states:

This situation and story is being distorted from the true facts by social
media. The incident that occurred on Wednesday did not involve Serbian
Huskies.  They were Hybrid Wolves that attacked a resident family cat and
the owner of the cat as well became very aggressive towards the officers.

The officers tried others means prior to putting down the animals.   One of
the officers involved was also a highly trained K9 officer.

At this time I do not have the status on the well being of the cat that
sustained extensive injures caused by both of these animals.

Please trust that our police officers are not the kind of people that they
are being accused of.  I ask for you to contact our police chief directly
by email or phone for more information on this case.

I have CC’d Chief Land on my response to you here.

Thank you for your time,

Bull… crown point police officers involved are those type of officers. Had one of the officers involved tell me that “I should carry an updated photo, and be able to throughly describe my son.” In regards to very credible threat of my ex possibly kidnapping my child. You tell me how they aren’t like that. If he was so highly trained he would’ve known, that they weren’t coyotes.

When did the Mayor become an expert on breeds of dogs, where did his info come from , papers cleary show siberian husky not wolf mix , was the cat owner under the Mayors staff , funny how NOW it says they were aggressive to the officers , that should have been the 1st comment in report , to somehow justify these officers actions. Deadly force should only be used in a life threatening situation.
With no animal control in CP , officers should have mandatory training on how to handle domestic pets.

This comment by Mayor Uran, “They were Hybrid Wolves that attacked a resident family cat and the owner of the cat as well became very aggressive towards the officers.” is he stating that the Owner of the cat became aggressive towards the police?!?!? (I know that is not what he means, but it sure sounds like it when you read it). Still NO reason to shoot the Huskies. Huskies, not Wolves or Hybrid Wolves. It is a well known fact that dogs, no matter what breed, will chase cats. I’m sure the homeowner knew whom these Huskies belonged to, why didn’t he run next door and tell them their Huskies were at his house? This could have prevented this sad accident. I have a suspicion that he wanted the Huskies killed from the get go and let his cat out on purpose. If the homeowner who claims the Huskies became aggressive towards him is telling the truth, talk to the paper, tell your side. By hiding behind the Mayor only proves to the rest of us that you are lying about this whole horrible accident.
