Crown Point police responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call from a resident yesterday that ended up in two beloved pets being shot. Deputy Chief Janda confirmed to the Northwest Indiana Gazette via telephone that a frantic woman called and stated “there are wolves or coyotes killing my cat.” The woman further reported that her husband tried to save the cat and was now being attacked. Officers responded and found the cat being attacked by two animals which they did not immediately recognize as dogs. The dogs had no collars or tags. The officers pepper sprayed the dogs in an attempt to get them to flee. When that did not work, at least one officer fired on the animals killing them.
The Gazette is still attempting to reach the owners of the dogs for comment.

I’d like to hear their definition of ‘attacked.’ 2 dogs sniffing around a cat, doeant qualify as an attack in my opinion. Cops will shoot any dog nowadays whether they’re mean or not. ASPCA will come out to educate officers on how to deal will family dogs in situations for FREE….but what I’m told by by the police department is that they don’t have the time for the officers attend such training. This should be mandatory while training to become an officer in the first place.

I’m am sorry for the injury to the cat, and the owners of the Sibes will never forgive themselves for their dogs getting out of their yard…but 7 shots by 4 different officers on dogs that where never attacking anyone while they were on scene is OUTRAGEOUS!!! This is a complete abuse of power by law enforcement, and we must send a message that we will no longer stand for it. Police officers should not be able to unilaterally make the decision to execute our lost pets without cause. And the babblings of the home owner shouting they were Coyotes should have never factored into their decision to execute these pets. Since when do police officers take orders from civilians as to when their fire arm should be discharged.

This is just outrageous. What kind of ignorant fools does the city of Crown Point employ? These fools should have their weapons taken away from them immediately and suspended if not fired…talk about excessive force. It was my parents house that it happened at, their cat was laying on his patio, in his own yard, the dogs came in their yard, muddy from head to toe (did not look at all like dogs, more like coyotes or wolves), grabbed the cat and took it into a ditch and proceeded to try to kill it! My dad tried to save the cat and the dogs got aggressive with him, my mom called 911 for help, the cops got there and did what they had to do given the situation they were in. This is a sad situation for all involved. The media makes everything so much worse!

Sorry something about this story stinks…wolves are larger, have longer legs, longer snout, tend to avoid populated areas. As a husky mom I can tell you they are sweet dogs, love people. Seems to me hysteria as what was perceived to be two wolves was a catalyst for the fatal shooting of two beloved pets.

Coyotes are way smaller and don’t even resemble huskies so the fact that they called the police rather than animal control is a huge mistake on their part. Outdoor cats are the largest cause of bird extinctions. Look it up if you do not believe. Keep your cat indoors where it is safe and so is it’s prey. I have 3 and they have never set paw outside and live just fine. Probably longer than the ones that go outside. And if you really think there are wolves and coyotes around your house, your an idiot for letting that cat out. Are you trying to feed the larger wildlife with your animal or just that clueless? Also, why won’t you answer everyone questions about how your cat and father are? Could it be because nothing really happened to them and you know you will look like a fool? those dogs would have killed that cat within minutes.. they were playing with it… the police report clearly states the dogs were settled down when the property owner said he wanted them killed , they sprayed mace and thats what upset the dogs.. they had no idea why someone would try to hurt them… plus one shot each would have been enough.. you say this is your parents?? are they dog haters? why did he want the pelts when he thought they were wolves?? plus police shot at the dogs with several known childrens spots within range..what if a kid got shot on accident.. would you be satisfied then?
Sorry for what happened to your parents’ cat, but why do the dogs deserve to die for acting within their instincts? It’s when people justify killing by more killing, especially animals, which do not understand our “laws” (for lack of a better word) that we become cruel, bloodthirsty, and hypocritical.
These were my mom and dads dogs and trust me they are not vicious dogs. The police need to have something done to them for this. I understand they weren’t wearing collars or tags but I am certain that neither dog was attacking any animal the police didn’t have to fire at them. Wasn’t pepper spraying them enough. They were sweet, beautiful dogs, and I am so sorry I let them leave. They seemed to be headed back home, and in this neighborhood it’s not unusual to see dogs that have strayed off for awhile to have alittle fun. I just never could have imagined something like this happening to them. I am so sorry.

There are other forms of restraint aside from firearms! Even if the pepper spray didn’t work, a number of more reasonable and effective means of safely subduing the dogs must have been open to the police force (emphasis on force here 😡 ).
A blatant lack of respect for life (or even property) and display of poor judgement in a tense situation from member of a group intended to PROTECT and SERVE should be a red flag to the entire CP community and across the nation. If you can’t keep your head in stressful situation, turn in your badge and weapons and do us all a favor! Are there any requirements or training for CPPD, or do you just show up?! The community members deserve a say in who represent them, and the police are a form of representation.
The direct victims are pets this time, but may not be in the next altercation.

A Husky looks nothing like a coyote, maybe a wolf but what are the chances of twin wolves running in Crown Point. Zero !!!! I cannot understand how they could have shot these beautiful animals, Is that not what we have annimal control for, to come pick up lost animals.? If there is any action taken on this, please, please contact me. Those dogs were in my dad’s yard not long before they were shot. My 91 yr old dad, my 6 yr old niece, and I were trying to keep them here till someone came looking for them. They were sweet, beautiful dogs who were licking on us, wagging their tails, and happy to be having a little fun and gulping the water that we gave them. This is absolutely criminal and just makes me sick! They didn’t look a thing like coyotes, and at 61 there haven’t been any wolf sightings in my lifetime. If the CP police are this stupid, please let us go back to the county!!

I have previously had a Coyote mix and he was a bright copper color…NOT brown. As with any breed of animal, there is no one set color. I’ve seen black Coyotes and Wolves. I have 3 Siberians and they don’t all look them same, nor do they look like all of my friend’s Siberians…including his almost pure white one.
Google Coyotes and Wolves and see the varieties. As for no Coyotes and Wolves in your area… These are timid creatures and have “lived amongst us” longer than you may realize.
There are coyotes out here, which is why they shouldn’t be letting their cat out, and they look nothing like these dogs. There are no wolves, look it up. Coyotes may come in different colors, but I’ve had them where I lived in Cedar Lake, and Lowell and all of them have been shades of brown.
Huskies in general do not tolerate Cats very well. Usually ends up very bad for the cat. I say this because it is possible that the Huskies were attacking the cat, though in my experience it is over very quickly. Still no reason to shoot. Spray does not work on dogs when they are prey focused either. CP needs to get educated.

This is a sad story for all involved. The owner of the cat getting involved in the altercation had a lot to do with the officers actions. I can understand wanting to save your pet but you should never get involved in an animal fight. Especially if they truly believed they were wild wolves!!! By putting himself in danger of “unknown animals” forced the police to protect a citizen. If he had stayed on the porch this most likely wouldn’t have been necessary. Maybe they should’ve tried water. Using the hose works wonders. Had two dogs that often would fight each other, mostly because the boy tried to mount the girl. Sprayed with water not only caught there attention, but side tracked them to play. People should honestly learn to handle the situation, or don’t bother at all. Sad that 4 officers had to respond. How many of Crown Point’s finest does it take to screw in a light bulb? The whole force. Liberty Park was better of unincorporated.

Have to agree with you Jeramie. I have 2 dogs and 3 cats, the dogs have lived with the cats their whole lives but still love to chase them. My guess is the dogs chased the cat into the creek. I have yet to hear anywhere, including from their daughter on here, any injuries to the cat, or it’s owner.
I have owned huskies for over twenty years there are a fees things wrong here.(1)the dogs were running loose,they are well known for this give them a chance and there gone,first mistake.(2) no collars or tags,not good.huskies are also well known for not licking cats or small animals,all the above led to the ending.huskies in general would not hurt anyone,they would rather kiss you,play with you than hurt you,they have also been mistaken for wolves not coyotes. Total over reaction caused this tragic ending.I could see shooting a animal possibly if it was attacking a human but not when it is attacking another animal,it was in my opinion a very bad judgement call on the parties involved.

This is pathetic! I am a Siberian Husky breeder. Yes, huskies will chase cats, and other small animals, but attack someone…please! They come by their love for man by many years of breeding, and are one of the safest dogs to have around children and adults. We have several dogs that are certified therapy dogs we use on a daily basis in a major hospital in Peoria, Illinois. What was this department thinking? What happened to a tazer? I can not express the outrage I feel toward this department, and the person calling in. Have you ever seen a wolf? They are larger than a 65 pound husky! What is wrong with you fools? Have some common sense! This department should be replacing the animals and adopting a new policy. Then a written apology handed to the owners.

It’s so difficult not to be utterly enraged. Lord knows it would take everything I have not to walk up to the officer, snatch his weapon and cold-cock him right over the head with it. And rightfully so, too.
Fact is, there seems to have been a LOT of reports of law enforcement officers seemingly executing dogs at will. At first I thought that maybe it was a by-product of training over thinking. Now I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t a sort of media-induced hysteria phenomenom at work. Can police officers no longer think for themselves? Can they not analyze a situation and use critical judgement without resorting to lethal force?
Wolves? Coyotes? Please, I’m not dumb. Don’t insult my intelligence. I can understand the caller being hysterical, but that’s one of the things officers are SUPPOSEDLY trained to deal with, instead of getting swept up in the chain of events. This is sick, but again that’s Crown Point Police. I find it very hard to believe they used a spray on these two dogs before pulling their weapon. Sounds to me someone was TRIGGER HAPPY. I would really like to know what officers did this cowardly act. But then again, I probably could guess. OMG, how pitiful this department operates. I know people are posting this picture to show, allegedly, how “sweet” these dogs were by the ‘kisses’ they are giving the man (their owner?). Kinda reminds me of the ‘kisses’ I was getting from a friends’ dog earlier today…and she’s bitten me twice in a month’s time. Both times required antibiotics and keeping my hands (one for each hand) bandaged and elevated for at least a week. The first time was from trying to put the dog in a cage after a ‘fight’ had broke out while I was dog-sitting. The second time I was trying to prevent a fight by ‘seperating’ two dogs.
The reason for the first bite? I was never informed that she might have been abused before she was rescued by her current pack-leader(human) and that grabbing her by the collar was not a good idea. As for the second time? I could only keep my eyes on one dog at a time and I was watching the wrong one. With rescue’s, I never fault them if I don’t know the history. I do feel in this circumstance that, maybe, the dogs owner didn’t really know what his dogs could be capable of. I always test my dogs ‘tolerance’ levels for different situations so that I know what safeguards/actions I must take to prevent a situation like this from happening.

Dear Crown Point Law Enforcement Officer- I was not in your position to know what you did if it was correct or not, but due to the fact that they “dogs” were attacking a cat (that was a pet) and DID not have collars on, as they should. Also take that with the fact that the “dogs” had attacked the human who tried to contain the situation while they 911 call was being places. I support your decision to shoot the animals. These people, who are responsible for the dogs, should be held accountable and not be supported as much as they have been. Why, if you cared so much, were your dogs without their collars on? Why and/or how did they escape?
Why, if they loved this cat so much, was it allowed outside in an area were there is the occasional coyote sighting? The cat may have been in it’s yard when this happened, but I’m sure when it’s let out it doesn’t always stay there.

Unfreaking believable, we just had the same situation here in Marshfield WI where 5 cops surrounded a lovable, super friendly, scared pitty in my neighborhood. This dog was attacked by a bigger dog and he was trying to get home after somehow getting loose. He was shot between the shoulders and the cop shot him again saying that he charged him. He never charged anyone I have neighbors that saw the whole thing, infact he was shot right in front of his owner and 6 yr old daughter. I’m sick of cops feeling like they can shoot our companion animals, animal control was never even called in til after Officer Punke murdered Duke!
Why wasn’t animal control called? This should have been handled much peacefully these Dogs didn’t attack anyone. Furthermore the cat involved in this was not owned by this couple he is a neighborhood cat “A Stray” people on the block called it the corner cat. Unbelievable. These dogs would of never hurt anyone. Lessons learned by all, I hope. Keep collars with tags on your dogs at all times, keep your cats indoors, don’t let any pet off your property unattended, or on your property unrestrained (It’s in almost every cities/towns ordinances). And start petitioning to get cops educated on how to read animal behavior and how to handle calls where an animal is involved. Cops are the most ignorant creatures when it comes to animals…I’ve read about them opening car doors during traffic stops or accidents where an animal bolted (seatbelt the leash handle!), and seen video of a cop trying to grab a Rott’s collar and because he snapped at the stranger trying to grab him, he got shot. We need a way to force police to get training!! They need to keep Catchpoles in their trunks and have training on how to safely use them…keeps the animal at a safe distance until animal control comes.
Plain and simple those cops helped out a fellow deputy who’s cat had got mauled! They can say anything they want to try to cover up what they did but that doesn’t mean people have to believe it! But for this cat owning deputy to ask for the pelts of these two beloved family members is outrageous and beyond comprehension!
The cat owner was affiliated with the sheriffs Dept. in that town, he said he wanted them shot so they were shot, then he called the vet. where their body’s were taken and said he wanted their pelts! These dogs were cold bloodedly murdered by these cops who were close enough to them to actually see that they were dogs and not coyotes, I read the police report plain and simple and they think that because they use the word coyotes over and over and over that it will make any difference, not for me it doesn’t!

We recently lost our beautiful Husky, Roxie. We have INDOOR cats (as they all should be) and she loved them, as she did our 14 pound rescued Pomeranian. She would slap her paws down on the floor trying to get them to play. She would let them lick her and walk underneath her. We were lucky to have her for four years. She was approximately two when we adopted her and she had been very abused. Rox would of never hurt our cats. So anyone that says Huskies will go after cats all I can say is ours didn’t. Also, the neighbor said these two beautiful dogs were just at her house licking her, her six year old niece, and her 91 year old dad. The were drinking water and wagging their tails. They sure sound vicious to me! That was sarcasm! I don’t live in Crown Point, but if I did I would worry about cops that are so afraid of two Huskies that they would shoot at least 7 times making sure they were both dead!
Wow! It is absolutely amazing to see just how many people are either psychic, or have romper room mirrors! To know each and every detail in a scenario they were not involved in, and can judge others that were, is really an amazing talent. Myself, I think I would be very careful to judge those that risk their lives for others. It takes a truly amazing person to put their lives out for others. As for this event, I wasn’t there. I don’t know exactly what happened. I do know, however, that I will never know if or when I may need the police, fire or ems to help me. When I do, I will always be grateful they are there.
If you took the time to read this, which I’m assuming you did, you would know that there were witnesses to the event here, friends, and family members of the owners of these two huskies. I am very close friends with several police officers and I have family members that are police officers whom I thank everyday for their service. However, not all officers are good people. I know of several situations in which officers personal lives and feelings interfered with their professional judgement. You are making the same assumptions and judgements that you claim others are making. Why come on this public forum to cast a stone, when you can simply empathize for all. It’s hard to watch an animal that you love be mauled. It’s hard to come home to find that 2 animals you love dead. However, the cruelty of shooting an animal 3-4 times each resembles torture not decisive judgement. This pattern is a characteristic of a serial killer before they take to humans, not a police officer that had to make a judgement call. If these cops get away with treating animals like this, how long do you think it’ll take before the same agressive response turn to human interactions?
I heard about this story, read about this story and sadly there were no winners in it. Thank you CPCP for protecting the community and addresssing a threat. For you city folks who think that pets cannot revert to their animal instincts, such as “pack mentality” you are sadly mistaken. They are animals, they have animal moments-watch discovery channel. This was clearly one of them, but do not insult the response of law enforcement. What if they let these dogs go, if they would have decided to leave the cat alone and continued this “pack mentality” and corner a child…the response would be, they had an opportunity to prevent this and they didn’t do their job. I wonder if the dogs would have injured the man trying to protect the cat would make peoples preceptions different about the outcome?
No Shelly, these dogs were not roaming around with a “pack mentality”. In fact, right before this they were loving, and licking an old man and a child who were complete strangers to them.
Vicki, please look up pack mentality. It is an event/situational response for these animals. They can be loving, but do not negate what they did. Heard they surrounded an officer that was trying to assist the man and cat. You weren’t there, be thankful this wasn’t a child. As far as number of shots, maybe try tried to avoid killing the dogs yet they continued to run at officers so they fatally shot them. People need to get over the fact they died. The owners should be happy they weren’t cited by the city. They should be. It’s not about misidentification of the two dogs, it’s about every attempt was exhausted and the threat continues to the officers so they reacted. Like I said thank you CPPD this could have had different out come where others were hurt.

Well, from some of the comments here, it would seem that if those dogs had been killed in the road by cars then the owners of the dogs would be drawn and quartered for not taking better care of their dogs… That’s what it boils down to doesn’t it? Dog owners should not let their dogs roam off of their property unattended. Their owners were the irresponsible ones. Those poor dogs should have had better people. It’s a good thing that they didn’t find some child to tear to shreds instead of a cat.
Chuck, the owners DID NOT LET the dogs roam! They got out accidentally by the owners step-father. What part of that is hard to understand? Also just minutes before the supposed attack the dogs were at a home wagging their tails, drinking water and licking, yes licking the 91 yr old owner, his daughter, and her 6 yr old niece. I’m sure if the little girl’s aunt had any feeling that the dogs were dangerous she would not have allowed her to be near them, let alone close enough to be licked!

Huskies have been known to kill cats. But in this case I think they where just playing.. As far as anyone thinking they were wolves is just plain stupid.. They just wanted to kill the dogs.. That is what cops do,they kill our pets. Why? Because they can.. They not only kills dogs that get loose or wander away from home, some are tied in there yards or in their homes or in kennels. Sure the dogs growl, they sense the cops aggression towards them or their loved ones..
