Hammond Festival of the Lakes Kicks Off Amid Security Concerns

17 Jul

Concerns over security cloud the opening day of the Hammond’s Festival of the Lakes after two events involving explosives in the Region.  The Hammond Festival features headliner Smokey Robinson on July 17.  Robinson is a music legend with hits such as Tracks of My Tears and My Girl and admission is free for all.  Local pop icon Nicole Jamrose will open for Robinson.  Other national acts to appear at the festival include Lifehouse, Better Than Ezra and LL Cool J.

The festival also features rides, a beer garden, and the Kathleen Pucalik Memorial 5K run and walk.

I don’t like being a frightened individual; however, as we look back on events where extremely large groups of people have gathered for highly publicized events and have ended in tragedy it makes me very Leary of attending. I’m not saying that we need to give up our celebrations where we have the opportunity to share our great community with others not from this area; however, my concerns are that we just might not be prepared for what could become a potential opportunity for another terrorist attempt. I urge the public to be extremely aware of your surroundings at ALL times if you attend the Festival. Report ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS IMMEDIATELY to a police officer or official, backpacks, large bags, packages, anything someone could just drop and run away from. PLEASE BE SAFE, SMART, AND ALERT THIS WEEK!!!!!

There’s a difference between being afraid to live your life…and taking foolhardy risks. This event would be a foolhardy risk. Once someone tries to grab media attention with homemade explosives smuggled in, you can bet there will be at least a dozen copycats wanting their 15 minutes of fame. If you attend this event, you will have to spend your evening studying every backpack, every purse, every water bottle. Is that REALLY your idea of fun? The bottom line is never make a bet you are unwilling to lose — by attending this event, you are gambling your life. Is it really worth it?
