Deadline Near for Poet Laureate Nominations

The deadline to submit nominations for the Indiana State Poet Laureate is August 1, 2013. Nominations should be limited to one, single-page cover letter and a resume or CV detailing the nominee’s qualifications and accomplishments. No additional materials should be included with the initial nomination.

Nominees must be residents of the state of Indiana and remain residents during their two-year term of service. Nominees should be published poets with experience in educational program development.

Nominations must be submitted to the Indiana Arts Commission by 4:30 p.m. (EDT) Thursday Aug. 1, 2013. Nominations should be sent to the attention of Susan Britsch: sbritsch@iac.in.gov. For more information, contact Susan at 317-232-1281.

Indiana’s current poet laureate is Karen Kovacik, an Highland native.  Her biography on the Indiana Arts Commission website states:

“Karen Kovacik was born in East Chicago and grew up in Highland, in Lake County. She’s the author of four collections of poetry, most recently Metropolis Burning, and her work has received numerous honors, including the Charity Randall Citation from the International Poetry Forum, the Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Prize, and a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis. In 2004, she was awarded a Fulbright Research Grant to Poland, and her translations of contemporary Polish poetry have appeared in many anthologies and journals, such as American Poetry Review, Crazyhorse and Southern Review. She’s professor of English at IUPUI, where she directs the creative writing program. In 2010, her poem “Invisible Movements” won the Moving Forward contest and will be installed along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.”
